Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet rich plasma (also known as “PRP” or Selphyl) is a specialized treatment that uses a portion of your own blood (plasma) in order to tighten and enrich skin tone and colour. Platelets found in plasma are rich in growth factors which have been shown to stimulate tissue repair, growth and collagen production.

What area(s) can be treated?

Platelet Rich Plasma Technique can treat any area of the skin that is thin, wrinkled or loose.. This treatment allows natural tissue rejuvenation and improves skin texture, tightness and thickness. We most commonly treat:

  • Area under eyes including dark circles
  • Crow’s feet
  • Neck, decollote,
  • Hands

How does it work?

The technique involves drawing a small amount of blood from an arm vein. It is then spun in a centrifuge which separates PRP from the rest of your blood. The blood is then mixed with a precise amount of calcium chloride to create a gel-like matrix called a Platelet Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM). This matrix acts as a stabilizer for the “platelet rich plasma” at the site of injection.

The final product therefore consists of your own centrifuged blood plasma as well as the matrix.

Through a series of small injections under the skin, the product is applied to the area that requires rejuvenation. The high concentration of growth and repair factors contained in platelet rich plasma are released into the skin, triggering new cell and collagen production which smoothes fine lines, tightens and thickens the skin. This is the same natural process that occurs in your tissues every day; just in a more concentrated fashion. PRP provides a gradual improvement in skin volume, tone and wrinkles over time, with desired results lasting 18-24 months.

How long is the procedure? How many do I need?

The entire procedure will take 40-50 minutes including topical anesthetic, the drawing of blood and the injections themselves. The number of treatments needed depends on the severity of the problem and the response to treatment. It is generally recommended that you plan for 2-3 sessions spaced from 4-6 weeks apart for the best results. Although the results are permenant, normal aging still progresses and maintenance is required.

Is the treatment painful?

Anesthetic gel is applied prior to the injections, which reduces discomfort significantly. The product itself is close to physiologic pH of your skin, therefore it does not have any burning sensation and is quite comfortable after treatments. Most people find that Tylenol is adequate for any post procedure discomfort.

Are there any side effects?

You can expect that there will be some tenderness, redness, bruising and swelling following PRP injections. This is highly variable, but typically lasts from 24-72 hours. If the area bruises, it may take longer to resolve (5-7 days). Please note that although swelling Is typically 2-3 days , it can be quite substantial and last up to a week. Platelet rich plasma is natural and does not contain any animal or synthetic components as it comes from your own blood.

How is PRP different from other injectable dermal fillers (like Juvederm)?

The tissue rejuvenation from PRP is a gradual enhancement of the skin itself. Fillers typically provide immediate volume enhancement for facial contouring. In many cases, PRP and Fillers are used in combination for best results.

When can I expect to see results from the treatment?

Most patients see an improvement in skin firmness within days after the treatment – as soon as the swelling subsides. We recommend that you plan your treatment when you can take some time off.
